“Pilgrim Song is the result of my desire to search for a new, more refreshing approach to a more than familiar text. A "new and refreshing" setting of Ave Maria sounded impossible. I started with a traditional Gregorian Chant version of Ave Maria my choristers already knew. After much reflection, combining Gregorian Chant with the image of ancient pilgrims singing in procession made this project more exciting! My imagination took me to a place where I have personally longed to experience - to walk even a part of the famous Camino De Santiago. In my minds eye, I see the ancient pilgrims, inspired by a beloved Marian text, being urged on physically, mentally, and spiritually by the repetition of the phrases, and through the addition of simple percussion.”
