FAQ

  • I found a free score on CPDL, why should I pay for yours?

CPDL and IMSLP are fantastic resources, but highly inconsistent! You may find a stellar edition with all the information you need (and only a few mistakes), but I’ve found rehearsals much smoother with professionally prepared editions. The time you’ll save is well worth the money.

Many of the “modern” editions on IMSLP are 19th and early 20th century collected works. The editorial methods are outdated, the scans are mediocre, and the clefs are often old. Steinbock Press will save you time.

  • Isn't it better to perform from facsimile or manuscript?

So many original partbooks and scores are on IMSLP now - and reading from original sources is an important skill. If you have the time, it’s absolutely worth it to have a workshop or experiment. For the concert you’re trying to put on this season, I would suggest a modern score. And remember, Renaissance scribes and Baroque printers made typos too! It’s much harder to find the typo in a Flemish choirbook…and it’s always in the rests, too.

  • I want to buy music directly from the composer, isn't that better?

Yes! If you can directly support a living composer, please do that! We compensate composers fairly - 70% of sales go directly to them (well above the industry standard). The advantage to them is that we take care of the typesetting and administration - so they can focus on writing more incredible music.

  • Your catalog is small, why would I look here instead of another major Canadian press?

The bigger the publisher, the more in their catalogue to wade through. I was perpetually tired of looking for new works in a sea of music I wasn’t interested in; either because it was for different levels than I needed, or because the publishers were less curatorial with their catalogues. If you’re looking for children’s choir music, you probably won’t find it here. But if you’re looking for a curated collection of excellent vocal music, I stand behind every piece for sale here. There is no filler at Steinbock Press.

  • Can you make me a new edition of a piece I found on CPDL?

Probably! I love learning about new works and I love working on an edition that will suit your needs. I charge an hourly rate, get in touch to discuss - and the best part of commissioning an edition is that you get to adapt the music to your needs! Fewer tenors and basses but some powerhouse low altos? Let’s put it up a third. Don’t want all 17 verses that Schütz set? Let’s pick your favourite. Editing tells a story, and I’m excited to tell yours.

  • Can I commission you for an arrangement?

Yes! I’ve done a lot of arranging of contemporary music over the years - everything from Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot to Britney Spears and Bruno Mars. I’d love to bring a bbno$ tune to your choir - get in touch and let’s plan!
