About me.

In 2005, I sat in my high school hallway and copied the Beatle’s ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ from a piano/vocal score into an arrangement for string orchestra. In 2010 I started experimenting with putting chords from Nystedt and Schafer into arrangements of Britney Spears songs. In 2015 I moved to the Netherlands to study the critical editing of ‘Early Music’, specializing in the music of Johann Rudolph Ahle, and in 2020, during my time with vocal ensemble musica intima, I began drafting the plans to build an imprint of choral music that honoured and served composers, not publishers. Now, in 2025, I’m focusing on the work that I’ve always loved the best - creating new editions, carefully preparing them for performers, consulting with composers, studying manuscripts - and you’ll be able to find it all here.

About this.

Steinbock Press strives to be a publisher serving the interests of composers, performers, and editors in a fair and equitable way. We do this through:

  • Transparent, ethical, and flexible contracts with composers, with industry-leading splits between publisher and composer.

  • Careful proofreading to ensure accurate editions.

  • Spartan typesetting - you won’t find thematic imagery here, but you will find clean scores, allowing you to spend all your time rehearsing on artistry, not fixing typos!

  • Approachability - reach out if you have questions or concerns! Chances are, if you have a concern, another director does too. Let’s fix it now, instead of continuing to publish mistakes, unclear scores, or, in the worst case, offensive texts.

For a long time, I used a picture of a rabbit on the front of my editions; he was playing an organ and can be found in the Macclesfield Psalter. Launching this press, I was looking for something new, something public domain, and something less musical. I came across the Tübinger Hausbuch - a mid-fifteenth century book on medical astrology, known today mostly for its incredible illustrations. All of the imagery for STEINBOCK PRESS is based on graphics from this text, you can read more about it here, or view the entire manuscript here.

About goats.

The alpine ibex is a goat with a grey-brown coat that lives in the European Alps. In German, Steinbock is used for the zodiac sign of Capricorn, which I am. While I come from a long line of settler roots in the so-called new world, I also have many Germanic roots, and I’m fascinated by the different historical astrological perspectives. A sixteenth century German astrologer might have suggested that I was born as Saturn held dominion, dwelling in the house of Capricorn; a conjunction conferring gravity, introspection, and a lifelong struggle for order in the midst of chaos. What is publishing, if not a struggle for order in the midst of chaos?
